AIRS Direct Broadcast Retrieval Output Product Description ---------------------------------------------------------- The retrieval algorithm is a statistical eigenvector regression method, using a large global (clear-sky) training set of representative profiles and surface prameters, and their associated simulated (using forward model SARTA - April 2005) radiances. A set of 1688 selected 'good' channels are used for the calculations. Regression coefficients for 6 classes of brightness temperatures (at 1000 cm-1), and 11 classes of scanning angles (between 0 and 49 deg) are calculated. The only user input required by the algorithm is the AIRS L1B radiance product. This technique retrieves: surface pressure [hPa] surface skin temperature [K] atmospheric temperature [K] at 101 pressure levels total precipitable water (vertically integrated) [cm] atmospheric moisture [g/kg] at 101 pressure levels total ozone amount (vertically integrated) [dobson units] atmospheric ozone [ppmv] at 101 pressure levels surface emissivity at 15 wavenumbers surface reflectivity at 15 wavenumbers The IMAPP AIRS Direct Broadcast Level 2 retreival software differs from the operation product in these ways: 1) The output product is a binary .img file with accompanying header file and is not HDF, 2) The horizontal resolution is ~14 km (i.e. AIRS FOV size, with 90x135 pixels in one granule), whereas the horizontal resolution of the operational product is ~ 50 km (AMSU footprint), 3) the vertical resolution is 101 pressure levels; for the operational product it is 28 pressure levels, 4) the algorithm is a regression method only, 5) the algorithm is applied to every AIRS FOV in the granule, regardless of cloud conditions (the products are not valid over clouds). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The AIRS Level 2 retrieval output product consists of a separate .img file in flat binary format, and accompanying header (.hdr) file. The .img file is a 337 float band interleaved product at single pixel resolution. Please see a list of these bands below. The test output file that you create from the input test data sets contains the nominal AIRS swath size of 90 elements and 135 lines. Therefore, the product .img file is 90 elements, by 337 bands (parameters), by 135 lines. In FORTRAN, it would be read as profles(90,337,135). This would be reversed in C - profiles(135,337,90).
